Company launches Battery Box 1.5 equipped with cutting-edge safety system in North America

High-output UPS battery solution for data centers unveiled at exhibition, featuring space efficiency and cost effectiveness

SEOUL, Korea – September 8, 2024 – SAMSUNG SDI announced today the company is participating in Renewable Energy Plus 2024, the largest renewable energy exhibition in North America, to introduce its latest battery solutions for energy storage system (ESS). The exhibition is set to kick off on Sept. 9 for a four-day run at Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Under the theme of 'A Sustainable Future Driven by PRiMX,' SAMSUNG SDI will exhibit its lineup of batteries for ESS, including SAMSUNG Battery Box (SBB) 1.5, high-output batteries for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solution and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for ESS.

At the center stage of the exhibit, will stand the latest SBB 1.5, SAMSUNG’s flagship ESS battery. SBB is a 20-feet containerized solution for battery energy storage systems and is encased with high-nickel NCA cells and modules stacked on racks. Designed with high spatial efficiency, SBB 1.5 loads 5.26 megawatt hour (MWh) per unit, increasing the energy density by 37% from its predecessor. It can go online once it is connected to electricity networks.

Another notable feature of SBB 1.5 is its enhanced direct injection system where embedded fire extinguishing agents get sprayed directly onto modules for fire suppression. Leveraging this technology enables SBB 1.5 to prevent fire and thermal runaway even more effectively.

SAMSUNG SDI will also display high-output battery for UPS, targeted for mass-production next year. Compared to exiting products, the newest UPS battery has increased more than 40% in output per rack, owing to the company’s efforts to innovate materials. The space needed for installation has decreased to a ninth of current products using lead-acid batteries, while the lifespan has more than tripled.

For all ESS batteries, SAMSUNG SDI has ensured safety by adopting the prismatic form factor equipped with vents that prevents potential thermal propagation, and insulation and fire extinguishing sheets inside the modules.

At the RE+ exhibition, visitors can also check out SAMSUNG SDI’s LFP battery for ESS as well as efforts for ESG management, including its commitment to the RE100 initiative, achievement of a carbon footprint label from Carbon Trust and efforts to recycle used batteries.

“A significant growth is anticipated for the ESS market as the renewable energy market expands and demand for data centers surge in line with the accelerating AI revolution,” said Yoon-ho Choi, President and CEO of SAMSUNG SDI. “SAMSUNG SDI will cement its leadership in the global ESS market, including the United States, with its 'Super Gap' technological competitiveness."
