Transition to 100% Renewable Energy

We aim to fully shift to renewable energy for power consumption in our operations home and abroad by 2025 and this will allow us to reduce our GHG emissions.

<Targets for Transition to Renewable Energy>
  • Transition to renewable energy
    • 2025: 68%
    • 2030: 76%
    • 2040: 90%

Carbon Footprint Program

As part of our efforts to advance environment-friendly management, we are extending the scope of our products certified under carbon footprint programs to improve the environmental performance of our products. In June 2023, we achieved a feat of obtaining a carbon footprint label from Carbon Trust based on the calculations made on our 49.5Ah (module) and 4.8Ah (cell) products.

* We leverage Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to develop measures to improve our environmental impact. LCAs are performed to identify environmental loads such as GHG emissions generated throughout the entire product lifecycle from the extraction of raw materials to product use and disposal and to analyze their substantial impact.

Reducing direct GHG emissions

Samsung SDI is actively rolling out measures to reduce LNG usage in order to cut down on Scope 1 direct GHG emissions.

Shift to zero-emission vehicles for all business vehicles

We introduced electric commuter buses that do not generate environmental load during operation at our worksites and have since equipped our domestic locations with EV chargers in their parking lots so that employees and customers can use their eco-friendly vehicles at their convenience.

Saving Energy

To reduce the energy consumed at our worksites, we provide our domestic worksites which consume a large amount of energy with technical support for energy conservation. For overseas worksites, we offer locally-hired staff technical skill-up training for the purpose of energy saving.

Biodiversity Policy

The company recognizes the importance of ecosystem restoration and biodiversity preservation and thereby implement pursuant activities in our safety and environment management policy. By the same token, we support Convention on Biological Diversity and UN SDGs.

Detail
  • Samsung SDI will conduct and take all necessary investigations and measures to prevent, minimize, and mitigate elements and factors that threaten biodiversity when we carry out new projects such as the entry into new business bases and expanding business sites. In addition, we will make efforts to apply the policy to our suppliers.
  • Samsung SDI recognizes the International Convention on Conserving Biodiversity and World Heritage areas and IUCN Category I-IV protected areas and will comply with the legal standard of the state and region of the plants where the said convention is applied. Also, we will actively cooperate with external professional agencies and professional groups if necessary.
  • Samsung SDI will make efforts to achieve No Net Loss (biological diversity loss) in plants and promote Net Positive Impact(positive influences). We will do our best to preserve the ecosystem and biodiversity by reducing environmental impact, including eco-toxins from plants, and by introducing Life Cycle Assessment to identify products’ impact on biodiversity over its lifecycle.
  • Samsung SDI considers the protection of endangered rare and endemic species as the top priority and will review participating in the initiative to protect the biodiversity of the region, nation, and the world. Also, we will continue to provide employees, executives, and stakeholders with information to enhance their knowledge and understanding of biodiversity protection issues.

No Deforestation Policy

Samsung SDI will continuously take policies to eradicate deforestation to protect the global environment, such as protecting the ecosystem and responding to the climate crisis. Such is incorporated in our safety and environment management policy, and we support UN SDGs related to eradicating deforestation.

Detail
  • In the future, Samsung SDI will not establish a plant that damages forests, and we promise to restore green areas, including forests, when existing plants are closed.
  • Samsung SDI will implement sustainable environmental policies, committed to achieving Net Deforestation Zero, a promise to compensate through reforestation by 2050.
  • Samsung SDI will establish a process to review deforestation risks of partner companies and launch an environmentally friendly management system to eradicate deforestation and protect the environment with suppliers.
  • Samsung SDI will cooperate with civil and environment protection groups, and even professional agencies, if necessary, and make efforts to create forest and green areas around plants.
