Battery Charging Precautions

Stop charging immediately when.

you see smoke or liquid leakage, or smell foul odor.
you see swelling, deformation, or discoloration of a Li-ion battery, battery module, or battery pack.
a Li-ion battery, battery module, or battery pack gets overheated.

In any of the above cases, move the battery product to non-conductive surface such as a concrete floor area, away from the house or any flammables. DO NOT recycle, reuse, or distribute such battery without permission and dispose of them immediately in strict accordance with local regulations, as prescribed in “Battery Disposal Precautions.”

1. To ensure correct and safe charging and use of battery, follow the guidelines provided by SAMSUNG SDI and battery pack manufacturer.

User manual on product, charger, product specification, manuals for installation and/or maintenance, safety check sheet, etc.

2. Make sure to use a special charger designed for lithium-ion batteries or battery packs.

Using a charger other than the one provided by end-product and/or battery pack manufacturers increases a risk of fires and explosions. Li-ion batteries or battery packs must have a built-in protection mechanism such as protection circuitry so as to prevent fires or explosions caused by short-circuiting, overcharging, or overheating.
Such protection mechanism serves as a preventive measure for fires or explosions caused by short-circuiting, overcharging, or overheating. A fire or explosion may occur if a charger (including, but not limited to, USB port, car cigar jack lighter, chargers for tablet PC or cellphones) other than the specific lithium-ion battery charger provided by end-product and pack manufacturers is used, since using a wrong charger can overcharge (overcurrent, overvoltage) the battery which is likely followed by overheating, increasing a chance of fires or explosions.

Charging

Lithium-ion batteries require a constant current, constant voltage (CC/CV) type of charging algorithm.
Please contact us if you intend to use a different type of charging other than above specified.
The charging current and voltage must be lower than the maximum current and voltage specified by SAMSUNG SDI.
The charging must be done under the operating condition specified by SAMSUNG SDI.

Discharging

Lithium-ion batteries require a constant current type of discharging algorithm.
The discharge current and voltage must be lower than the maximum current and voltage specified by SAMSUNG SDI.
The discharging must be done under the operating condition specified by SAMSUNG SDI

3. End-users or consumers should not use individual, loose lithium-ion batteries.

Li-ion batteries built with protection device, such as lithium-ion battery packs or systems, are to be used exclusively, not in loose cells. Any unauthorized disassembly, modification, or re-assembly of SAMSUNG SDI’s product is strictly prohibited. SAMSUNG SDI shall not be liable for any damages whatsoever caused by such act.

4. Make sure to monitor the battery or battery pack status at all times.

Such monitoring can help prevent a fire or explosion caused by short-circuitry, overcharging, overheating, etc.

5. Charge the battery at room temperature.

Too high or low temperature, and high humidity may cause damage in batteries.
As for the specifics of optimum operating conditions, please refer to the product manual and O&M manual.

6. Do not place chargers, lithium-ion batteries or battery packs on the bed, under the pillow, or on the couch.

7. Do not leave lithium-ion batteries or battery packs plugged into the charger for a long period of time.

Do not overcharge lithium-ion batteries. Do not charge lithium-ion batteries for an extended period of time.
The charger can automatically stop charging after a certain period of time. For more information, please refer to the charger manual.

Battery Use Precautions

1. Make sure to check the status of a Li-ion battery, battery module or pack before use.

If you suspect an external or internal damage to the battery, DO NOT use such battery, battery module, or battery pack. Under NO circumstances plastic cover (tubing) of a Li-ion battery, battery module or pack should be damaged. If damaged, DO NOT use such product. In the event where any such damage is observed, DO NOT recycle, reuse, or redistribute the damaged battery products and ensure that they are disposed of immediately in strict accordance with “Battery Disposal Precautions."

2. End-users or consumers should not use individual, loose lithium-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion battery does not provide the same level of protection as lithium-ion battery packs do.
Any unauthorized disassembly, modification, or re-assembly of SAMSUNG SDI’s product is strictly prohibited. SAMSUNG SDI shall not be liable for any damages whatsoever caused by such act.

3. DO NOT remove a lithium-ion battery from its battery module or pack.

Lithium-ion batteries do not provide the same level of protection as lithium-ion battery packs do.
Any unauthorized disassembly, modification, or re-assembly of SAMSUNG SDI’s product is strictly prohibited. SAMSUNG SDI shall not be liable for any damages whatsoever caused by such act.

4. Make sure to check the accurate details of specification of a lithium-ion battery, as prescribed by the battery pack manufacturer.

ONLY lithium-ion batteries specified by end-product and pack manufacturers must be used.

5. DO NOT use or modify a product built with a lithium ion battery without any protection.

Products built with proper protection should automatically shut off the power and prevent overheating, fire, or explosion.
SAMSUNG SDI is unable to trace the batteries to its end-product application and monitor whether the end-products (e.g. e-cigarettes, battery-powered fans and other devices) have proper protection mechanism. E-cigarettes, battery-powered fans and other device manufacturers are not legally required to implement such protection necessary to prevent overcharging, overcurrent, overvoltage, or over-discharging, which is why extra care is needed when handling them. 6. Make sure to charge a Li-ion battery or battery pack correctly at all times.

“See “Battery Charging Precautions” for detail.

7. Upon replacing a Li-ion battery, you must replace all batteries.

If lithium-ion batteries in use are combined with new batteries, a fire or explosion may occur.

8. Any unauthorized disassembly, modification, or re-assembly of SAMSUNG SDI’s product is strictly prohibited.

DO NOT dismantle, cut open, nor disassemble a lithium-ion battery.

9. Under any circumstances, DO NOT mix batteries of SAMSUNG SDI with those of different brands.

DO NOT mix batteries of different brands, different types (e.g. alkaline, Nickel-metal hydride, Ni-Cd battery, etc.), or different dimensions as such misuse may cause a fire or explosion.

10. In the event of significant drop in battery life or battery time, stop using such battery and replace it.

Do not charge or use lithium-ion batteries or packs at a voltage not exceeding 2.5 V/cell.
If you observe significant drop in battery time, check the voltage of lithium-ion batteries or battery packs before charging.

ESS Battery Use Precautions

1. DO NOT use the battery system for purposes other than agreed upon in advance.

2. Make sure to wear appropriate protective gears as set forth in local statutes and regulations and follow all safety instructions of SAMSUNG SDI.

3. Batteries must be stored, installed, and used under appropriate conditions.

As for the specifics of optimum operating conditions, please refer to the product manual and O&M manual.

4. DO NOT smoke within twenty meters of a battery system.

5. DO NOT place anything on battery modules and BCUs.

6. DO NOT eat or drink in close proximity to a battery system.

7. Handling ESS batteries requires two or more workers.

8. DO NOT approach batteries in operation.

Battery Handling Precautions

Keep the following in mind in order to prevent fires.

If a battery exterior exhibits an irregularity, DO NOT use the battery as it may indicate internal damage. DO NOT reuse a used and disposed battery. See “Battery Disposal Precautions” for detail.
DO NOT store a lithium-ion battery in a pocket or a bag individually. If in contact with metals such as coins, keys, or necklaces, it may lead to a fire or explosion, incurring a great personal and property damage.
DO NOT use conductive objects (e.g. metal) on positive (+) and negative (-) terminals of a battery as it can cause a short circuit.
DO NOT expose batteries to heat or direct sunlight. If placed or used in an environment at a temperature of 60 ℃(140 ℉) or higher, the battery may take damage. - DO NOT store a battery inside a car where direct sunlight gets in.
DO NOT heat a battery either in partial or as a whole. - DO NOT store a lithium-ion battery in close proximity of heating devices such as an induction heater, an iron, a heater, etc. - DO NOT store a lithium-ion battery in a high temperature environment such as a microwave, dryer, oven, etc. - DO NOT solder a lithium-ion battery or a battery pack either directly or in proximity.
DO NOT use a battery if it gets wet or exposed to a highly-humid environment. - A lithium-ion battery can indeed still work after getting wet but it would cause corrosion, leading to a fire.
Make sure that Li-ion battery packs have protection against static electricity. - Static electricity may damage a battery pack’s protection mechanism.
DO NOT hit or puncture a lithium-ion battery with a hard object such as a rock or hammer.
DO NOT step on or exert pressure to a lithium-ion battery. - A short circuit inside a battery may cause overheating, fire or explosion. A lithium-ion battery resembles a normal alkaline AA battery but has much higher sensitivity to external impact (e.g. fall, shock, etc.).
DO NOT let a battery fall nor drop it. DO NOT exert mechanical impact or pressure to it. - A short circuit inside a battery may cause overheating, fire or explosion.

1. First-aid measures - If battery liquid comes in contact with eyes or skin, immediately flush the affected area with water and consult with your doctor. Lithium battery contents can cause a burn or skin irritation when in contact.

2. End-users or consumers should use Li-ion battery packs only.

Battery packs usually come with proper protection.

3. End-users or consumers should not use individual, loose lithium-ion batteries.

- Lithium-ion batteries do not provide the same level of protection as lithium-ion battery packs do. - Li-ion batteries require proper protection that can automatically shut off the power and prevent overheating, fire, or explosion.

4. Under any circumstances DO NOT do anything that can cause a short circuit in a battery, battery pack, holder, etc.

Force discharging a lithium-ion battery may cause leakage, fire, or explosion.

5. If you see positive (+) or negative (-) terminal contamination, wipe it with a clean cloth.

6. For air transport of lithium batteries, leave the battery packs installed.

Removing a battery pack do not help a battery pack’s stability.
Please carry the spare lithium-ion batteries in your carry-on baggage. If there is a problem during flight, the flight crew members can handle it better.

Sending e-cigarettes in checked baggage is banned.

ESS and xEV Battery Handling Precautions

1. Strictly follow the guidelines of SAMSUNG SDI for use and handling of batteries. (product manual, installation manual, O&M manual, safety check sheet, etc.)

2. Any unauthorized disassembly, modification, or re-assembly of SAMSUNG SDI’s product is strictly prohibited.

Battery Storage Precautions

Make sure to check the following for proper battery storage.

Keep lithium-ion batteries out of reach of children and animals.
Store lithium-ion batteries in a dry and room-temperature environment. - DO NOT store them in a refrigerator or a freezer.
DO NOT keep the battery fully charged or full discharged. - Lithium-ion batteries may become unstable if kept fully charged or completely drained, likely to cause a fire or explosion.

1. Do not remove original packaging until you use lithium-ion batteries or battery packs.

2. Make sure to remove a lithium-ion battery or battery pack from the product
if you intend to leave it unused for an extended period of time.

Keeping a lithium-ion batteries or battery packs in the device unused for a long time may cause problems such as leakage.
Check the voltage before charging for use if lithium-ion batteries or battery packs have been stored long.
Under any circumstances DO NOT use or charge batteries or battery packs if the voltage does not exceed 2.5 V/cell.

Battery Disposal Precautions

1. Make sure to abide by local regulations relating to disposal of batteries.

2. DO NOT store lithium-ion batteries with other waste nor dispose of them in a trash bin.

- Check with a local authority for proper disposal or recycle of batteries.

- Make an inquiry to your seller when disposing of lithium-ion batteries or battery packs.

3. Seal battery terminals with a non-conductive tape or a terminal cover to prevent them from coming in contact with other batteries or conductive (metal) objects.

4. DO NOT dispose of SAMSUNG SDI’s batteries along with other types of batteries.

5. DO NOT keep used lithium-ion batteries in a bag, drawer, box, etc. stacked with other objects.

If a partially charged, used battery is stored in such condition, it may cause a fire.

6. DO NOT dispose of batteries in fire.

If lithium-ion batteries explode in a fire, it can cause serious personal injury, such as chemical burns and property damages.

ESS and xEV Battery Disposal Precautions

1. In any of the following cases, dispose of the battery immediately in accordance with local regulations;

- a battery has fallen over, been dropped, dealt an impact, or exposed to fire (high temperature) or moisture;
- a battery has been damaged or deformed;
- a battery demonstrates abnormal performance;
- a customer’s decision to discontinue use of a battery;
- after battery EOL (SOH not exceeding 70%)

2. SAMSUNG SDI strictly forbids any unauthorized use (including reuse, disassembly, repair, etc.) and distribution of batteries subject to disposal, and arbitrary disposal of such batteries. SAMSUNG SDI hereby will not be held liable for any damages and
losses arising from such act.

E-Cigarette Precautions

Battery Safety Information

Stop using replaceable and rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (hereinafter “RLIBC”) produced by SAMSUNG SDI in your vape or e-cigarette device.
SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC is not manufactured for the use of individual consumers, and the use of RLIBC by such individual consumer can lead to fire or explosion that causes serious personal injury or property damage.

1. SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC is not designed or produced for use in any vape or e-cigarette.

2. SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC is designed for electronic devices, such as power tools and laptops, properly equipped with a battery management unit that reduces the risk of thermal runaway.

3. SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC is not designed to be handled by any individual consumers, and SAMSUNG SDI hereby will not be held liable for any personal injury, property damage, or loss of life caused by use of RLIBC by such individual consumer.

4. SAMSUNG SDI does not authorize any third party, including vape or e-cigarette makers, retailers and distributors, to sell or distribute SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC for individual consumers as power sources of vapes or e-cigarette devices.

5. Please also refer to statements of the U.S. Fire Administration, the FDA, and the Consumer Technology Association regarding the safety of vapes or e-cigarettes.

Power Bank Precautions

Battery Safety Information

DO NOT dismantle nor re-manufacture prismatic lithium-ion batteries made by SAMSUNG SDI and stop using such batteries in power banks immediately.
SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic lithium-ion batteries are not produced for any use by individual consumers, and distribution to and use by individual consumers may result in a fire or explosion that causes serious personal injury or property damage.

1. SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC is not designed or produced for use in any power banks.

2. SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic lithium-ion batteries store high-capacity energy, and are designed for ESS, xEV and built with a battery management unit that reduces the risk of thermal runaway. Lithium-ion batteries manufactured by SAMSUNG SDI are not to be sold to individual consumers, but to battery pack manufacturers or system integrators only.

3. SAMSUNG SDI’s prismatic lithium-ion batteries are not designed for use by individual consumers, and SAMSUNG SDI hereby will not be held liable for any and all losses and damages caused by unauthorized disassembly, modification, reprocessing, distribution and individual consumer’s use of such batteries.

SAMSUNG SDI does not authorize any third party, including power bank makers, retailers and distributors, to disassemble, modify or distribute SAMSUNG SDI’s RLIBC to individual consumers without permission. Such unauthorized act can cause damage to battery cells. If any damaged cell is used in a power bank without any built-in protection mechanism, it is likely to lead to a huge accident, posing a threat to human life and health.
