Acquiring various flexible battery technologyIn these days, interest on wearable devices is getting higher. Recent innovations of healthcare band, smart watch and glass help us to see the growth potential of flexible battery. In November 2014, Samsung SDI unveiled world’s first flexible battery which is not only bendable but also rollable. Applying our own technology - flexible structure design and material technology -, our flexible battery is so durable that it still works normally after going through tens of thousands of bending test. We are now focusing to improve the technology maturity in order to apply to various kinds of wearable devices.

Strengthening R&D of materials for rechargeable battery Rechargeable battery market has recently been extended from small-sized to medium-large sized battery for automobile. So we focus on developing a new technology that can overcome the limitations of existing materials as we see the increasing significance of ensuring system solution competitiveness such as fast charging technology for electric cars. We now have a plenty of devices using rechargeable battery and the competition between companies is increasing. So we are putting strengthened R&D efforts on performance improvement of existing materials and on new high-capacity materials as well in order to maximize battery life for application but to reduce its charging time.

Introduction Samsung SDI promoted Li-ion ESS business in 2011 on the basis of our world’s top technology for small-sized lithium-ion rechargeable battery. We have been able to become industry’s number one just after three years of business by virtue of world’s best stability of our rechargeable battery that comes from the time of small-sized battery business. The fact that batteries we’re using for ESS are identical to those supplied to BMW electric cars can make the quality of our ESS more trustful. In addition, our country-specific optimized solution enabled us to exploit the markets such as electronic and home market in Europe, commercial market in US and home market in Japan faster than our competitors. As a result, in the third quarter of 2014, we took the number one spot in the global ESS market with a market share of 23.6% ESS

Major R&D works and achievements

Expanding and exploiting ESS market As an industry leader, Samsung SDI has tried to dominate the market. We released a European home product in 2014 which is briskly sold in the European market through our partnerships with Hanwha Q-Cell and Sharp, etc. And we have also made large-scale. supply to the demonstration project for frequency regulation(F/R) done by KEPCO. However, we are not complacent about these achievements but still making efforts to intensify our marketing to exploit a new market. For instance, in 2015, we signed a MOU with ABB, a global strategic installation company for developing micro grid ESS business, gaining a foothold for a new ESS market. Another example is an establishment of a joint venture in 2014 with Sungrow, China’s largest PV inverter manufacturer, for business cooperation, laying a foundation for penetrating into the Chinese ESS market.

Electronic Materials division timely develops core materials for high-tech IT devices such as semiconductor, display and next-generation energy. Especially we try to develop competitive products with our innovative technology and consistent quality. In 2014, we have developed high-efficiency electrode paste, deposition materials which makes OLED high-efficient and long-lasting, next generation CR material for high-resolution. In 2015, we also strive to take the dominance in the next generation core material market as well as existing market by developing OLED materials which we have been working on, next generation polarizing film and high luminance CR, etc.
