The necessity of Storage

Worldwide effort to find energy that replaces limited fossil fuels has continued since the 20th century, and due to this effort recent world energy market has seen the three following changes.

The change from manufacturing efficiency to the maximization of using efficiency.

The change from centralized generation to decentralized generation.

Developing new renewable energy and alternative energy.

Of these three changes, the change from manufacturing efficiency to using efficiency means storage of electricity using night-time electricity that has low demand in oder to increase the use of low-cost energy sources, and the plan using stored energy in daytime when the demand for electricity is high.
Decentralizing generation means the change from centralized generation system to the development of decentralizing electric power sources. centralized generation system that produces large-scale energy in one place tends to be converted into the decentralizing generation system that uses the energy directly produced in smaller unit, such as family generation system and village new renewable energy generation system.
Along with these changes, the development of new renewable energy like the sunlight and wind power and of alternative energy that uses bio fuels is actively being promoted. Due to the change in energy use environment and the development of new renewable energy, as we can see in the above three changes, Storage, an electric power storage unit, has now become more important than any other time.

What is Storage?

Storage is a product that basically stores electric power when the demand remains low and use the stored electric power when the demand is high in order to improve energy efficiency.
For the demand of electric power, our country's peak demand during last 10 years increased 6.7% per year, and the deviation became double(5.4 → 10.2GW). That is, the demand for electric power has been continuously increasing, and the deviation(max-min) of the demand has become serious. This deviation is more serious in developed countries, causing the falling-off in the equipment use.
For the supply, it becomes more difficult to control and predict the quantity of electric power, since nuclear power generation and new renewable energy(the sunlight, wind power, tidal power and etc.) has increased.

Domestic Electric Power Supply Condition

Storage is an essential unit that stores unstable electric energy during wind and photovoltaic power generation, which is sharply growing new renewable energy, and supplies the unstable energy to electric power system again in necessary moment. If there is no such energy storage unit, any kinds of serious problems like sudden blackout occurs because of unstable sunlight-dependent electricity supply. This Storage takes an important part in the electricity storage systems for households, the medium-size system for industrial/commercial use, and the extra-large system for power plants and substations like Frequency Regulations.
The applications of Storage are classified into

relatively small-scale(dozens of kWh) household storage unit

MW class short-cycle storage unit that adjusts rapid voltage and frequency change of electric power

long-cycle storage unit that is used for storing night-time electricity and using it during the peak load

V2G system that stores energy in electric automobile in order to transmit electricity to the system instead of parking fees

Reflecting this environment, Samsung SDI renews the concept of pro-environmental technology and the business based on the technology. The company is promoting the commercialization of high-capacity storage unit for Storage in order to promote pro-environmental energy manufacturing and service industries that innovate energy efficiency.
