The next generation sunlight batteries (solar cell battery) which are being developed by Samsung SDI are dye-sensitized solar cells, also known as DSSC (Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Battery). In comparison to existing silicon semi-conductive solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cell are cheaper, more transparent, and able to realizevarious colored solar cells.
Due to this characteristic, DSSC is noticed to be proper for the building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) that uses solar cells as outer walls or glass windows of buildings.
A dye-sensitized solar cell battery, DSSC is an electrochemical battery using chemical reactions, and generating electricity when photo-sensitized dye absorbs the sunlight and generates electrons. The principle of power generation of DSSC is very similar to that of photosynthesis of plants, so it is often referred to as artificial photosynthesis. Its materials and processes are cheaper than existing semi-conductive solar cells. It is environment-friendly, transparent due to the characteristic of the materials, and especially able to realize various colored solar cells.
| Semiconductor solar cells | DSSC | |
|---|---|---|
| Power Generation Cost | High | Low |
| Power Generation Efficiency | High | Normal |
| Pro-Environment(Material & Process) | Normal | Great |
| Color | Limited | Various |
| Transparency | opaque | transparent |

Cheaper materials and manufacturing process.
Manufacture cost of DSSC is 1/3~1/5 the cost of existing semiconductor solar cell
Materials and process are environment-friendly.
Transparency of the materials (10~20% of transmittance rate of visible rays)
Power Window or smart window
Colors change according to kinds of dye
The realization of rainbow cells
Possible to use flexible substrates
Applying roll-to-roll process
