Samsung SDI's Brazilian corporation (SDIB) has been involved in volunteer activities through which the local president and staff spend time with the handicapped living near the plant and by drawing pictures and cutting grass. Many Brazilian people, most of whom are individualists, view such activities as somewhat unusual, and the volunteer services are viewed as a linkage between the Koreans and the local staff, causing them to have a feeling of brotherhood unity.

In Malaysia, where the government places top priority on ranking the nation among the world's advanced countries through industrialization, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening and environmental problems are getting worse. Under the circumstances, our Malaysian corporation is at the foreeng of solving those problems through numerous activities such as taking care of parks, recycling campaigns, donating goods to famine- stricken regions, and book donations, which are actively participated by its staff, numbering approximately 1,200. As a result of those activities, Samsung SDI's Malaysian corporation (SEDM) was honored with the 'Superior Company' Award from the state government for two consecutive years. The corporation was also awarded the '1998 Best Company' prize, the most prestigious award of the country, from Prime Minister Mahatir. With those honors, the corporation has made a great contribution in enhancing the image of Korea as well as the image of Samsung SDI, in Malaysia.
The corporation also played a major role in restoring the Lenggeng Forest in the Seremban region, which was devastated by the indifference of the local government and the disorder of the local people. Through a regular campaign to clean the forest-environment, the Malaysian corporation has succeeded in restoring it, and the local government designated the Lenggeng Park a state park and changed its name to 'Samsung Park' to honor the environmental public services of Samsung SDI.
This year (year 2000), we are planning to attend the special arbor event, managed by the government, to practice the spirit of Samsung's Green Management, and also, with the event of planting 100,000 trees in a minute throughout the nation, we are expected to be recorded on the Guinnes Book of Records.
